Sump Pump Maintenance
As the weather is starting to change and we are heading into the cooler months, perhaps your thoughts are turning to your fall decorations.
It’s typical to store them either in the attic or your basement.
The investment in fall or any holiday decorations may not seem like much at one time, however, over the years you do collect items and many become keepsakes.
Keeping your Indianapolis basement dry is as important to your home and your possessions as keeping your roof leak free.
If you have a sump pump, simple maintenance once or twice a year can save you costly repairs. Prior to performing simple maintenance, make sure you have unplugged the power source.
With the following simple steps, you can easily keep your sump pump running longer.
CLEANING YOUR SUMP PUMP
You will need the following materials to help you clean your sump pump:
- Plastic Bag
- Bucket
- Scraping tool
- Wet/ dry shop vac
Following these steps:
Make sure all systems that drain into your sump pit are not in use (this could include your washing machine) and make sure to shut off electrical power.
- Disconnect the pump motor from the discharge pipe and lift it out of the pit.
- To protect your flooring place the sump pump in a plastic bag or bucket and carry it outside to a hose.
- Use a scraping tool and a hose to get off all of the stuck on muck.
- Use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the remaining sump pit water and once empty, scrape out the stuck on muck.
- Clean the check valve by removing it and rinsing with a hose.
- Reinstall the check valve, reconnect the sump pump, and plug in the power cord.
By performing this sump pump maintenance and cleaning, you can ensure that everything is working properly and keep your Indianapolis basement dry.
